Even in clear warm reasonably shallow water surely you can see the logic in carrying your redundancy yourself and not relying on someone else to hopefully be near enough to you so you can communicate to them that you have a big problem???......

........Sorry mate, smilies noted but I'm not talking bollocks, its common sense.

common sense due to the way you dive, but not everyone dives like this. My team mates represent my primary source of additional gas if there is a problem. Losing one of those people is as serious to us as any other problem, and we would can the dive immediately if it happened. We do not "hope" they will be near enough. They WILL be near enough. It's just another way of dealing with probabilities of a problem, but I am just making the point that common sense, as you see it, is only the result of a particular set of assumptions and an approach to diving. There are always other ways that make just as much sense to other people.

As someone who dives in clear (but not, I'd have to say, warm) water all the time, I'd have to agree there. Also, my own experience when this happened was that my erstwhile buddy just didn't want to know.

I'd say if you are doing a holiday dive, with a buddy you don't know, that's exactly when you do want to be carrying an IAAS, in some cases, they can't be relied upon to p!ss on you if on fire, let alone share their air.
