Baggage restrictions

I am tempted to bring my gear back with me next month (August Bank Holiday weekend) as me sister is getting married on the Friday. I am going to combine it with a week at work so have to bring my laptop over. Getting my gear over is no problem as you are allowed two carry on bags if one's a camera/laptop but then I have trouble getting the plane to Newcastle from Heathrow and getting back to New York. Is there anyway around this as I remember the security check people were a bit anal in Heathrow this January when it came to carry ons. The two things I need to carry on would be cameras and laptop.

Most airlines, as far as I know, are only allowing one piece of hand luggage.

we was warned that if we tried to take two bags on we would be sent back to check them in. What P**s me off is that you can buy another bag from the dutry free shop and take that on......

UK airport security have become stupidly anal about hand luggage. Even if you are flying business class and allowed two items, they will not - without exception - allow you to carry two bags through security. Once through, they don't seem to care. i think it's really to do with throughput and "jobsworth" more than actual security.

They even have a table at most airports where you can try to cram all your stuff into one bag. I had to squash my regulator bag into my little carry-on rucksack last time I flew out to Egypt. Immediately after security I took it out again and they didn't care.

Flying out of the Netherlands, I was able to carry two bags through security, no problem.

With the the recent trouble my advice would be to play safe and get no hassel.

Get to airport.
Buy newspaper from shop.
Put camera into bag with newspaper.

Job done.

I must say that last week at both Gatwick and Hurghada, they were really strict on the only one piece of handbaggage thing. No exceptions. It was 40 odd degrees at Hurghada and they took a sealed bottle off water of me.

Best stick to the one bag rule or you might hack off everyone behind you in the queue!!!!!!!

I'll probably leave the video camera housing behind then. How do people travelling with video cameras cope? I wonder if I could fit a housing and laptop in the same bag.

And yeah, I noticed that. They don't care how many bags you get from the shops past security. I guess some bright spark thought, if we only allow one carry on bag through security, waiting times will be drastically cut. Muppets.

However out of Sharm last week, they let 20 of us through, and most if not all of us had a half full litre bottle of water on us! It's very random!

But I agree, better one bag and not annoy the hoardes behind!
