New YORKSHIRE diver looks for buddies/clubs in York area

As some of you know I have recently taken up a job at York University. Its a bit far to commute from Nottingham and we made an affort and moved house. Now we live in lovely village Barlby some 11 miles to the souoth from York (it actually belongs to Selby). It means I am a proper YORKSHIRE diver now!

OK, now I am looking for some (rebreather friendly) people/clubs in the York area who dive on a regular basis (I am actually used to dive every weekend). What is the nearest place to go? Bridlington (weather permitting) and Blue Lagoon (never been to)? Does any one go there on a regular basis?

Another inportant question- where to get oxygen/trimix fills in the area?

Cheers

Alex, welcome to Yorkshire. I know the Diver Training Centre in Appleton Roebuck, very close to you now, does pure O2 but I'm not sure about He. Worth a call though. The Dive Bureau in Harrogate does O2 but not Helium, but at typical Harrogate costs.

Blue Lagoon may be a little shallow for your RB as 6m is the deepest I've seen. I'd be happy to buddy up for trips to the East coast, or even Capernwray or Stoney.

I personally visit the Farnes or St Abbs if I want some seawater but I know there are some here diving out of Hornsea and Bridlington.

Hiya. Getting Nitrox of any description is a real PITA at the moment. It's a week turnaround from York's only dive shop. Blue Lagoon is supposed to do it, but didn't the last two times I tried. Appleton Roebuck had a "sick blender" (i.e. the actual person). I've ended up going to Leeds . Let me know if you get anything out of Steve at Appleton Roebuck though. I've been meaning to get back in contact with him on this very subject.

No idea about Trimix.

Anyway - don't you RB guys only need to fill up once a year

You might want to contact Mark Griffiths (on these boards) who goes out of Brid a fair bit.

Hi There Alex

There is a dive club linked with the University called Stingray Divers. Its not the actual Uni Branch but a linked club for ex students.

I am also the DO of York Sub-Aqua Club and we have a couple of re-breather divers on Trimix. (They have there own RIB too)

I know that they in particular would welcome you with open arms. They have started exploring the deeper wrecks dives in the Farnes like the patia and the Athelduke.

As a branch we do a lot out Bridlington and a lot in the Farnes. Brid has more wrecks than just about anywhere. But I guess most do. I guess most people do Divers Warehouse for Trimix fills or poss SDS in Sheffield.

Good Luck

Gary

Hi Alex
Long time no see, hope you are well.
We run our ribs off various places along the East coast and also use Tony out of Brid however after this weekend there is not much happening.
I will let you know, as we are planning some excellent stuff for next year in the trimix range. We are going to do this midweek using Tony,so let me know if you are interested.
cheers
Mark
Ps there might be a place for a dive this Fri about 55m out of Brid, let me know.

Thumbs up

Hi Alex,

I bought my VR3 off a Vision Inspo Trimix diver called James Birkley in Nun Appleton. Basically look on a map (Google Maps) and follow the river from Selby up stream, to where it forks for Tadcaster and York. He lives in the V of the Y, about 4 miles as the crow flys (19 if you go via Tadcaster). He might be a handy contact. PM me your email address and I'll email him, your email address to see if he wants to hook up..

Hope this is of help.

Dave C
