| If it works for those flights, then checking in luggage the night before (I did it with Virgin to Barbados in October) can be a good move. Then, they never specifically get to see your hand luggage. So a small, light-looking hand bag with a few heavy chunks in (plus the "scatter bits in jacket pockets") approach can help move a few kg around. (OK, I did have 2 big cameras and 2 laptops in my hand luggage - I was more working than holidaying - but you get the point.)
