Surface Interval: Discuss how cold does the sea get in winter? in the General Diving Forums forums: I reckon around 5 is the coldest in the sea, 2 in the quarries. It does vary with depth though. ...

I reckon around 5 is the coldest in the sea, 2 in the quarries.

It does vary with depth though.

Diving in the Gulf of Finland it was 5C on the surface with a thermocline to 2 or 3C at about 10 meters.

You just could not believe that the nice warm water you came back into to do you deco stop was the same as the cold stuff you jumped into an hour before.

The English Channel is never like that. Well... Unless you're in a wet suit when the dive is OK but you die on the trip back.

A group of us dived in Portland Harbour in February this year, water temperature was a mind-numbing 7 degrees. Maximum dive time was 40 minutes - I was frozen by 30 minutes!!
