its not a particularly good resolution the further from the main population centres you go, it has got better as the satellite pics get updated but the one for over my house is about 4 years out of date as I can see my old van parked in front of the house.

Its a lot better resolution in some areas, though I'm not sure how up to date they are. Where I used to live in Edinburgh, it shows long yellow poly pipes across the road, and they were there ~4 years ago.

They are both good and bad with different areas. Google Earth has the building where I work plus new units built last summer. Live Maps doesn't even have my building, it is at least 10 years old.

Yep I looked at that dive on google earth and it was just a mass of green murkyness, pretty damn accurate

But yes it does have some areas that have pants coverage and others where you can see peoples eyebrows.

A useful starting point for imagery is Flash Earth ...satellite and aerial imagery of the Earth in Flash - you can find the area you want, and flip between Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, and a few other of the online providers. Google and Microsoft are far ahead of the others, but between them which is best depends on the area you're looking for.

In theory Google should be getting much better imagery soon. A few months back the company which provides much of Google's imagery launched a new satellite with higher resolution than what's been available (from satellites) before, and once Google start getting that it should be better resolution and more up-to-date over larger areas.

David,

IIRC, the high res stuff is done with planes anyway. Usually for Ordnance Survey level type stuff and it may as well be done with the LIDAR surveys currently underway for flood planning.

You spoilt the illusion, half the population seem to think we have loads of satellites that can image one's patio furniture.

Its rather obvious on Live search which has what appears to be photos taken from 40 or so degrees (use bird's eye view) Radcliffe Camera in Oxford for example
Live Local Search
