well the day has come for the excellent lectures this evening.

i had a search but there only seems to be last years thread available sooooo

I just got home. I couldn't escape because my boss wanted dropping off at Bristol Airport (go what a nightmare that place is!) so i had to make a one hour detour which seemed to be about 60 miles.

That's a terrible diversion to have to make.

oh it was awful. I had to drop him off. No problem, thought I.... airports have a 'drop off' zone at the terminal. This one doesn't at the moment - the lane is closed -, but they haven't bothered to cover over the signs over the road.

just stop on the road then, if they have the discourtesy to not tell you how were you supposed to know. Unless it is a woman who manages the airport and then the answer would have been "well you should know".



as an aside the lectures this year weren't as good as the last 4 years, but they were still vey good.The second speaker, Mike Valentine was very good but he played too many film clips rather than talking about his job as a underwater filmmaker/cameraman. The finale from him though was excellent, am going to have a trawl through Youtube and google later.

the first speaker was Richard Pierce who has been tagging porbeagles and other sharks off the North Cornish coast and tracking the movements to get a better undersanding of how they live in the wild. A poignant moment was he told us about the 90 odd porbeagles caught on one trip off the coast of lundy by some line fishing twat. RP told us one of the tagged porbeagles was extremely likely to have been caught there as the transponder stopped at that point at the time of the fishing. The most amazing stat revealed was that one had been tracked to 200miles off the coast of Ireland, just goes to show how little we know about marine life.
