Question Any diving near Welshpool or in lake Bala

Hi all,

Can anyone help?? Going over to sunny Wales the following week, does anyone know of any dive locations near Welshpool? Or, anyone know of any clubs or individuals that dip into lake Bala or in that area that I can contact?

Thanks.

I used to live near Bala lake! But I wasn't a diver then!

There are a lot of good places up there and rather than list them, I've attached a link from Divernet magazine doing a precis on all North Wales diving. Just remember that nothing is "near" up there. When I was there, the nearest supermarket was 35 miles away, meaning a 70 mile round trip just to do my shopping! I learnt to shop monthly! The cinema was 50 miles away, so what with petrol for 100 miles and the entry cost and it was an expensive night out!!!

Here's the link, happy reading:-

The article linked to is a bit lightweight for your requirements if you get the book itself there are many shore-dives listed

Hi, thanks for these responses. Am interested to know if anyone has (or indeed can) dive in lake Bala?

I'm not sure if you can dive there. I know they do windsurfing, sailing etc. But it's fairly large lake. Here's a link about Bala and on home page it confirms the Bala Tourist information centre. Bala's not very big so if anyone knows they'll know. There is also a "sport" tab on there. It doesn't mention diving though. Good luck.

The Bala Information pages - Wales, UK.

Oh, and if you go from Bala towards Trawsfynydd/Porthmadog, about half way down that road there's a lake there. It's a reservoir feeding Liverpool. I can't remember what it's called but there's a sunken village underneath it. They did it middle of the last century. I know that people have dived there. I can find out what it's called so you can investigate further. I think, because of the village the covered to create the reservoir, it's got more to see when diving. Let me know if you are and I'll get it's name for you.

Yep, interested in anything in this area. Porthmadog would be good, can send the kids & mrs off on the train while I go for a dip!

the village is under llyn celyn and its really peaty water, I don't think diving is banned there but you won't be popular with some of the local whose families were forcibly evicte by the water company many years ago.

lots more info here- Welsh Reservoirs

you used to be able to dive in bala lake but again the water is like tea.

Yeah, there is always that!

What about the lake going the other way out of Bala. Llyn Efymwy (Lake Vyrnwy). That's another truly beautiful area and fairly large. I think it was also another village that was covered, wasn't it? Can you dive there?

Not sure as again its a reservior and water companies don't like the thought that somebody might die in the supply, never mind all the sheep that fall in and drown.

If you did dive it you would want to avoid the extract area or next stop out of a tap in Brum
