| The answer as covered by Janos is my take on this as well. I open the valve fully, 2 reasons, i once turned it back (maybe a bit too far) and when i got to 42m or so was not getting enough air, it was very noticeable, a quick fiddle had that sorted, but if something else had started to go wrong at the same time it could have got nasty. I know of at least one incident where a diver had done it the other way somehow. So a buddy check involving a shallow breath (as many people unfortunately do) and not watching needle swing resulted in him rolling in with very little air getting through. At 10m this lead to nil air, or none that was very noticeable. In this case it was made worse as it was at Bewl Water where there is no viz, so even though his buddy was next to him he had too feel around for his octopus. A near fatal incident that has led to him never diving again.

If there isn't somebody called a 'Dive Master' available how do you know who's making the tea? <sigh> Way off topic digression because I've just had a Microsoft moment and I need to kill somebody... I was out on a local hard boat, this was a few years ago mind, and some wet behind the ears lad who must have just finished his DM was out with us. I knew he wasn't part of the boat crew because I knew the skipper. To begin with he was rushing round helping people so I though he deserved a gold star for helping and ignored him, but then he started giving orders. Now I didn't mind if he ordered his group about as they were mostly his age and just as ill-equipped for a 35m wreck dive (singles and probably three ponies between the seven of them). However when he started on me I just had to laugh. That didn't go down well so he went into pointed question mode "Do you really think..." etc. but I'd finished my prebreath so I shouted "Diver Ready" and waddled down to the back end. The last I remember was him shouting "Your Buddy isn't ready!" as Dave bipped the horn and I went. When I got back they'd eaten all the chocolate biscuits too which I thought was a bit mean. Oh well. Back to SC_HANDLE OpenService(SC_HANDLE hSCManager, LPCTSTR lpServiceName, DWORD dwDesiredAccess); This one is all going to end in tears. Last edited by nigelH : 05-02-08 at 12:31 PM. Until a couple of years ago, I thought it meant Dive Marshal - now that I could relate to. I dunno, here I was 18 years in Aus, where it's very much the world according to PADI and I was just oblivious.

| Have a play with a new valve and it will tell you the answer; When closing a valve you can feel the seat come to a 'stop' and it really doesn't go much further even as you apply more turning pressure. Its a different situation when opening a valve though, 'cos as the stem comes to its fully open position (at around 3 full turns) there is a more gradual 'tightening' and it is possible to crank another quarter of a turn further 'open'. However, you really aren't opening the valve any more (it was already 100% open at 3 turns) you are merely applying excessive and unnecessary force into the stem/seat. So, open the valve until you feel the 'tightening' then back-off a Gnats nacker to relieve tension on the stem... as per Hickdive and his engineers instructions Berko ![]()
