Whatever else, going home and doing housework is not an alternative to be considered.

    Ever.
The staff at Wraysbury try very hard to find a buddy anyone who turns up there alone wanting to dive.

Dave or Jack are normally both happy to help

    Did you try asking?

I was there today - must have missed you somehow

Being a woman, you could have employed the "tears" card.

Sit by the waters edge crying until someone asks you whats wrong then when you've got them hooked tell tham that you have been let down and you were so looking forward to diving this puddle but now with no buddy you can;t and you are too scared to ask. Likelyhood is some sap of a man would either offer to dive with you or go and ask other divers if you could join them.

I generally tend to travel to the dive site with my buddy, so not a problem I have.

    Hi MJH

I was with Arthur when the call came through and he did suggest asking around,
and, Jack knew when he gave me my entry fee back

But really, there were not that many people around at 9am
A few couples, a group of very techie/ scarey looking divers and that group of three I did speak with

I got to the lake at 8.45 and was gone by 9.15 so I guess I missed you

I was just wondering what other people would have done in my situation
I like Arfie's recommendation the best

So, what do you do ……

    1) wander round chatting to people hoping to make a new friend/ future buddy
I live a very sheltered life in my village and don’t make friends very easily

    2) go round asking people if they would mind if I joined them
I’m rather shy and would find this very difficult

    3) get a cup of tea and watch people kit up and write a longer list of things to buy at LIDS
I don’t drink tea and already have a long shopping list for LIDS

    4) go home and do the vacuuming
yes, this is exactly what I did

    5) anything else

    Venus
To be honest I'd have probably just gone home again if I lived as close as you. If I lived as close as me I'd have hung around a bit longer and see if I could dump myself on some poor unsuspecting fool Hoovering wouldn't have come into the equation!

    Hi Ken

How are you and the lovely J

    I am shy ....
How much of me did you actually see for those 16 days?

The answer to that question isn't 'not as much as I would have seen if the weather was better and the girls actually wore bikinis'

I hadn't realised you went all the way to the Galapagos just for a bikini.

I guess the degree of shyness must vary depending on the location.

I think the extent of any shyness very much depends on circumstances and the company. I can see how sunshine would make a shy person feel more comfortable. It certainly seems to bring out the best in people, lots of smiles and therefore the chances of a more positive response from strangers or those we don't know very well.
I most definitely feel more confident when I am feeling happy and surrounded by positive people

And the people. Women I know (as friends) are happy to put their bare chesticles on display in front of strangers on holiday but not when I'm around. Where is the logic in that? In fact, f*ck logic, where is the fairness in that?

ps: And, yes, I always drool and pant like that when I'm on a 'holiday beach'. It's not my fault. I don't go on holiday very often and rarely get onto a hot and sunny beaches. I like hot sunny beaches. Where is the shame in that?
