Stoney Viz

Dived Stoney for quite a few years and thought I knew what to expect viz wise, summer crappy, algae bloom etc, winter good generally, seems to be throwing a few curved balls though, absolute pants recently, anybody know why?

Two things struck me today. One was how bad the viz was at the bottom of the roadway, at 21 metres, viz was down to a couple of metres.
Also just beyond the Stanegarth there was a cloud of silt billowing around just off the bottom for no apparrent reason, its an area that no one ever goes to!
I reckon it is just because it is so damn busy these days, that it never gets a chance to recover.

yep i agree to busy...viz was 2-3m tops in those areas you mentioned two weeks ago and it was heaving with divers!! could go to dosthill for cheaper entrance and not so crowded for the same viz..... but im going to stoney tommorrow but im not expecting great viz either but at least the car park will be empty

Not so sure about number of divers being the problem, my buddy and I went across the bottom of the hole two weeks ago only us down there but viz a couple of metres, incidently I dont think Stoney gets as busy as in recent years especially during the week

The poor viz is due to inversion, the cove has steadely been warming up until a few weeks ago when the temperature dropped again. This cooled the top layer of water cuasing the deeper water to rise and bring all the sh!t up with it.

Every time I have dived there over the last 3 months I have consistenty got 7 degrees (well 8 on the computer but it always reads 1 degree over everyone elses!)
Admittedly thats based on one visit per month over the winter... has the temp been fluctuating over the winter then ? What did it get down to in the end ?

Not a big fluctuation, less than a degree will do it.
