So you think your twinset's heavy?
At Tulamben in Bali, diving on the wreck of the Liberty ship there is a shore dive. The shoreline is owned by the local village and as part of the fee for using it, the ladies of the village act as porters for dive gear. The entry point is about 3-400 yards from the dive centre we used. This is the method by which they carry the gear. Who's going to complain about carrying twinsets from the top car park at Stony now?

They got some 5 foot nothing woman to carry my tanks on her head in Bali. We have a lot to learn from these people.

They're standard Luxfer 12l cylinders and most of the ladies doing the portering are around 5 foot nothing. However, we did have one little girl, probably about 10, doing some of the portering but she only managed one cylinder. What is even more remarkable is that once they have got them balanced, they often walk without even holding the load. Talk about poise!

The only time that we saw a load fall was when one of the men tried to help by carrying a cylinder.
