In some ways we're lucky in that there are very few 'shouts' and even fewer serious bends. However, when we're talking about my legs or my life, I like to err on the side of caution, so even if there's a 1 in 1000 chance I might be wrong, I prefer to err on the side of caution.

YMMV.

Errrr m8 your an Oxford grad who works for a govt think tank. Spare a thought for the rest of us

If you want to call it in and get the chopper coz you cut deco by 15mins I have zero problem with that just please don't do it for me.

In 1985 I was qualified as a prototype engineer working on subcomponents for British aerospace. Sadly CNC came along and the bottom fell out of the market for Toolmakers so I studded to become a remedial building surveyor

by 1994 I was one of only six consultants in the UK doing expert witness work in the field of building defects

In between I studded and became a BAGA assistant gymnastics coach just for fun

I did all my study for the above my self. IE I was totaly self taught when I sat the exams. I passed with a Distinction

So whilst judges rate me at performing gravimetric sampling and salts analysis and parents entrusted me with the lives of their daughtrs flying through the air, based on my self teaching, apparently others consider it unthinkable I could self teach to carry out triage on a DCI victim?

I find that most odd

Right - message missed in translation. The 'female related' post Steve referred to was not posted by you Fiona - that wasn't what Steve meant (he meant he had deleted 2 posts recently, one of which was yours) although I can see why it could be read a different way.

The post that was deleted was a result of a complaint from another member who felt it was a personal dig at him. We weigh these up on an individual basis and in this case I felt it added no value to the thread and could have caused offence to the person it was directed at. Sorry if you feel differently but thats a decision we have to take.

There have been no other posts of yours removed - I have gone through the logs this morning (which can't be accessed by anyone but me).

No, you're missing my point - I meant to say that the training is there for those who want it.

I wonder if they could do an extra day or so that focused on the different neuro-tests in more detail.

Bravado is one thing, denial another, but death an alltogether bigger issue.

I just hope that one day someone doesn't come along who doesn't know any better, reads the 'how to dive my way' posts and ends up dead because they followed some methodology that didn't work for them.

I am not responsible for the Darwin awards and neither is any one else.

There are other self taught divers out their. The big joke of course is AM taught herself to dive CCR and raved and screamed about how she was better at diving a CCR than any one else. She even raved that what training there was was actually inadequate and we deserved better.

At the time i thought she was a self obsessed ego maniac but now i have read her stuff met the girl and serveral years have past. The predictions of her imminent death were wrong whilst carded divers and instructors alike died around her, then I stated (like many other people) to think she just might have a point.

So if some Muppet decides to self teach ECCR based on the model of AM and they kill them selves, your saying thats AM's fault?

No sorry i don't agree.

Strangely the divers I know who self taught CCR are actually rather good at it.

A card doesn't make you competent, you make you competent.

I have no doubt that you could self-teach. However, I genuinely don't know how much work is involved: How many cases you'd have to observe, what you'd have to read, and how you'd stay current.

I don't have the confidence in my own abilities to spot the subtle stuff, and certainly when Mark Emery had his rapid ascent, no-one was tickling his feet!

I would like the CG informed if I missed 15 minutes of stops, but I also believe that adults are adults, and I have no problem with an informed adult telling me before the dive that if he misses 15 minutes of stops and appears asymptomatic.

Spot on.

Some of the self-taught CCR divers I know or have known:

Hans Hass, Peter Readey (he taught me but then what do I know?!!), Rob Palmer (died on open circuit), Dave Thompson, Martin Parker, Bill Stone, Stuart Clough. My card is a manufacturer's certification because there were no training courses then.

Start your own agency, write your own course. Job done!

Mike Bus is BSAC National Instructor No1. Who certified him?
