Oxygen Narcosis: Fact or Fiction?

The summary quote probably says all we need to know at the moment though...

"I am satisfied that if oxygen has any narcotic effect at all, it is far less narcotic then nitrogen and therefore has absolutely no significance to recreational divers."

Note the 'recreational' bit though. Garf may be coming from a technical point of view...

not really. It's anot a tecnical thing. PADI, whom the original poster states he trained with, have in their speciality course giude that nitrox has not been proven to reduce narcosis and that no assumption that it does should be made.

The thrust of the NRC course (which PADI bought) is that Nitrox adds more safety rather than more bottom time and that is what you get with "Nitrox for Free".

Hummm...

Interesting article.
Somebody I've never heard of telling you why Dr. Bill Hamilton is wrong about narcosis.

This sound like Nigel Hewitt telling you why Richard Feynman is wrong about physics.

Be careful Nigel.

Copernicus was a know-nothing who dared not openly contradict the known experts Ptolemy and Aristotle until he was on his deathbed but I believe he has been proved right since!

I'm sure Dr Bill would agree that we should always take more than a second look.

yes thats true ,, there always on the look out for new things to sell you ,,

there was about 6 divers in my club with a nitrox card of some kind ,,in the 90s
we went to the meldives one year 22 for the club , they were giving away free nitrox to the one,s with card ,,
the rest had to dive on air ,, when we got back from the meldives about 30 members from my club went and go a nitrox card.

let me tell you why ,, cos divers like something for free ,, ps about a year later i asked the members with the nitrox cards
to work out a mod for a % nitrox ,, and not one of them could remember how to do it ,, al 4 got how to ,, let me tell you why

nitrox ant free in the uk ,,
