Thanks for the advice, especially Odin for taking the time to write a long reply. Apart from the not insignificant matter of some exams, I'll be at RD&E. Either way, I'll be moving to Devon

Can't wait! I'm sat at the inlaws in Paignton overlooking the sea. It's like glass.

Don't really want to live in Exeter or anywhere else urban. I chose to work in Devon purely for the diving opportunities, so close to the sea would be good!

Teignmouth and Dawlish come to mind. Nice areas. Chav land or retirement heaven. I'd prefer the latter

Anywhere else to consider.

Thanks

Andrew
Tricky as I really only know Exeter well.

However I do know that a lot of people travel to Exeter from along the A38 corridor and Torbay area - this tends to infer where a lot of the work is. Non-urban property costs more and the SW house inflation has been higher than average in the last 10 years. You may need to think about heating fuel, oil costs have risen a huge amount. No gas = oil for many.

Best of luck,

Adrian

Of course it is, I'm driving to the midlands this afternoon, the weather is perfet for this evening's dive I am missing.

Oh well - welcome to Torbay traffic jams... Basically, all those people, and one little road in and out through Newton Abbot. Not good. Get it wrong - route, timing - and you've lost half an hour just to go a few yards.

Don't for get the other side (East) of Exeter. There are plenty of villages around the outskirts of places like Exmouth. A number of places though have become granny towns, which really pushes the prices up.

Crediton an the rural areas that side are lovely to live in and not that far from the sea.

I actually live on the Cornish Border with Devon up by Bude, probably a bit too far as it takes an hour to get into Exeter from here but we have great diving and a good bus route into the hospital if you fancy public transport.

When I moved here from Dorset I rented first and spend a fair bit of time traveling around finding somewhere that we really liked - worked for me.

Good luck with it

We moved from Dawlish last year and were very relieved to have done so. It's a town that seems to have become embroiled in some sort of socio-genetic experiment that's gone horribly, horribly wrong. A complete chavopolis. Teignmouth is ok apart from having the worst dive shop I have ever visited anywhere in the world.
We now live on the outskirts of Newton Abbot which is handy for Exeter, Plymouth, Dartmoor and the South Hams. Please PM if you need any advice on a specific location.
