If you could get your hands on an ali backplate then the weight saving would allow you to take the fins. I normally take a blue plastic buddy backplate which weighs nothing and it works ok.

Cheers

Yes have taken them on 3 trips now. I would also take my SS plate as I prefer to put weight where it is most comfortable.

I've taken my version of them more than once (Rocket fins), I do though have an ali bb for holidays which helps keep me under the weight allowance.

Last time I took the steel one it went hand luggage.

Bear in mind that IATA member airlines (that's just about all of them) have the right to charge you one percent of the first class fare for every kilo in excess of your checked baggage allowance. As a guide the first class fare is usually around ten time the cost of economy - so that's ten percent of your air fare per kilo.
Some make concessions but it can be luck at the check-in and airlines are realising that this is an easy form of exrtras revenue.
If you are travelling to Sharm, the excess could cost £25 per kilo. If you are travelling to the Far East it could be £70 per kilo.
(That makes a SS backplate rather costly.)
On my next long haul trip I plan to leave a lot of my heavier stuff with a gratefiul dive-guide because it will be cheaper to replace it than pay the excess over 20kg for the return leg.
Already I put regulator first-stages and heavier camera lenses in my jacket pockets.

Excess baggage charges can be punitive, and if you are asked to pay it is always worth enquiring about sending as unaccompanied baggage as rates for this are often significantly less. It is someties possible that this would even go on the same flight as you, but there may be a delay on collection at the other end.

A friend of mine did this when travelling Singapore - UK and saved loads of cash.

A mate of mine was saying something about a 'sports allowance' the same as you get for golf clubs? Anyone know anything about this?

Looking at the kit I think i'm gonna have to get me a pair of Quattros to cut a bit of weight.

Allowances

Baggage Allowance List - Page 12 - Divernet Forums

Not on this domain but it does list quite well what airlines will allow extra weight for sports kit.
