This is probably the busiest active divers forum in the UK. Many of the folk on here have been posting for years and have worked there way to the "god like status of 60m plus", I know quite a few of them. If you took the same poll on a flight to the Red Sea I think you would find the results rather different.

Funny thing about statistics, asking the right/wrong question to the right/wrong people can give you a right/wrong answer

I think you need to do some more research on your research.

Although I phrased the question in a sarcastic tone I have to say I have nothing but respect and sincere admiration for divers attaining these depths. Not only does it require thouragh training and ability but, despite protestations to the contrary, determination and, yes, courage. (unfortunately the written , as opposed to the spoken word, can often leave you wondering if someone is sincere as opposed to taking the pi**)

You are quite right when you say this is not a rigidly correct statistical sampling in terms of the global diver population but then I am wasn't interested in divers overall.

The point you make in that this is probably the most trafficed dive site reflects the probability that the contributors here are more likely to be enthusiasts and serious divers as opposed to 'fair weather divers' who do the odd dive to recreational limits, mostly, if not entirely when on holiday abroad.

You could do a similar poll of cyclists and then note some of them take their bikes off-road and do all sorts of extreme stuff the vast majority of cyclists would never dream of or aspire to: wouldn't you be interested to know why ?

In the same way I want to know what is the attraction for the deep dive and it is the views of the 'expert recreational diver' I was hoping to elicit.

As for Mark Chase's skeptical approach to being god-like we only have to admire his underwater hair style to realise we are in the presence of diety !

....and for it's protection I have covered it in a 3inch layer of fat

I am looking to get trained in trimix for exactly the reasons quoted above....untouched wrecks, deeper reefs with larger life.
