Flamborough Head Shore Dives??

Hi,

My buddy and I were thinking of exploring the east coast of yorkshire next weekend and were wondering if anyone has shore dived from either North or South Landing at Flamborough head. ie. what conditions to expect/depth? and do you need to get permission.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Jez

Hi.

Looking out to sea from the sea shore to about 3 miles off, the shit band is about 2 inch viz.

As we are at Aldbrough near Hornsea about 8 miles from Flambrough Head, I am sure the viz will be the same there on a shore dive.

Off shore you will get a bit of viz.
There was a dive boat yesterday unloading at Hornsea compound when I was getting my boat ready for the season, should have gone over and asked them what the viz was, anybody no?.

Stick to duckpond diving for a bit.

Cheers Ray,

Is that general for the east coast this time of year? We only started diving last year so are a bit unfamiliar with local conditions and are anxious to "take it steady" to start with.
All my sea diving to press has been in Scotland where it's not been too bad in some of the more sheltered sea lochs.

Again many thanks for the local knowledge.

Jez

Sometimes it can be reasonable but we have had strong North to East winds for the last few weeks, which always stirs up the "Edge".

If you search this site for "Flamborough" you get to a few decent threads. I'm also going to do this this year, I've had a recce, but most of the advice is wait until after June for better chances of better viz.

Dan.

The viz is very very good at Flamborough at the momemt, it could be 1, maybe 1.5 mtrs at the moment

If you want to dive North Landing, you'll need to park in the car park at the top £1.50 for all day, I guess in summer you'll need to be there early.

Kit up, and be prepared for very long walk down a very steep hill ( coming back up is a killer ).

Dive on an Ebb, neap tide (i.e NOT this weekend coming), to reduce the risk of getting wash to far off the head.

Depth is maybe max 6mtrs. There's a couple of boilers at the northern end of the bay, in about 4 or 6mtrs.

HTH

Q. Why did the razorbill raise her bill?

A. So the sea urchin could see her chin!
