I think, having put the unit together yourself that you should be able to do a try dive in the pool, I'm sure most have done worse Normally you don't get the O2 manual add valve with the unit until the course, I know one guy made his own out of an old suit inflator and some odds and sods from a Swagelok catalogue just to try his unit out before hand.

Taking yourself out of the gene pool is the entry requirement.
Dead is only one of the options, the other is to lose your ability to reproduce is some magnificently entertaining (for others) accident.
