emergancy signal missuse

rite so abit piissed off with a capital P .

myself and scuba git out divin today with 4 others . no1 to cox'n the boat so I volinteered to dry cox . drop in 4 divers as a group scubagit leading the dive .2 mins into the dive 1 of the less experienced divers had trouble clearing his ears leaves his buddy and shot to the surface .

OK hes on the surface we can deal with it . boat is about 50 - 100 meters away draining the water out . i see the diver on the surface and a clear signal . so i start to proceed to the diver .

next thing i get the most over expressed distress signal that there ever could be so i get to him recover weight belt etc get him on board . (other divers have surfaced due to separation) recover other divers .

so alls gud . well just on the way home i get a phone call asking why i didnt get to him faster "divers still under" my reply why was distress signal used " i lost my other 3 buddies" . ok so I tell him what the distress signal is for . and his brother (who was his actual buddy in the group) has told him that im at fault and should have sped up to assist him . neither are cox'ns and george irvine doesnt have a patch on the elder brother (sarc)

ps. it took less than 30 sec to get to him

so what ye all think .

ask him why he gave the signal , was he in distress?
dose he have anything to report .
were all divers recoverd shortly after.
the others were not on the boat at the time .where was the dive leader why wasnt he keeping an eye on him....
was every thing to keeping of procedure.
a group of 3 is hard enough in irish waters best is 2s.

Tell him you are making an incident report as a result of the distress signal...

It sounds like it was the worng decision to use the emergency signal, but as you say, he is not as experienced as you are.

I think that you need to temper it a bit, and although you would not use the emergency signal in that situation, if he's unsure in the future it's ok.

the group of 4 where divin in tow buddy groups but in the same group .

he was in distress cause he left the buddy group . dive leader was in the other buddy pair . divers where on the surface in and aroud the same time i got to him . buddy separation drill was adhered to . scubagit is always on the ball not his fault .

diver took it on himself to do the ascent and not to tell anybody .

incident has been reported to our diver officer .

You should really make an inident report although no one was injured the seperation and fast accent should be reported. The brother is only blaming you because he has been frightened. Dont beat yourself up over it wait a few days then discuss the incident with all that were involved and see what lesson every body can learn from it.

Graham.

Well, you brough GI into it, so my advice would be, follow Rule Number One - don't dive with wankers............ (scubagit excepted, obviously)...
