You could post something to Wikipedia about gigantic Cosmic Toads and declare yourself as a world authority on it, supplying some far out information that was plausable. If you were not challenged then you'd get away with it. People who knew no better would recite your words verbatim.

My point is that Wikipedia is only as strong (and accurate) as those people who contribute to it.

Be careful about telling people how things came about - as undoubtedly there will always be someone older with a better memory.

GI III class act. Have a look at the old techdiver archives , great entertainment and some very good info. George dived with Bill Gavin ,Bill Main Exley et al. The standard DIR rig was developed from Bill Hogarth Main`s single webbing harness. Standard gases developed during WKPP dives, as were protocols and minimum fitness and skill levels. GI III was director of WKPP and dived mostly with JJ during this time. JJ formed GUE to raise diver standards and training to prepare divers for cave/technical training. He (JJ) had a foreword in the IANTD Encyclopaedia of Technical Diving along with Tom Mount and Lamar Hires. GI III used an old adage, there`s no such thing as bad publicity, when he posted on tinterweb about DIR. It worked, he got everyone talking about DIR and investigating what it was about whether they liked it or not. Even anti DIR divers were au fait with a lot of DIR kit, procedures etc when debating with George.
So, who is George? IMHO a very clever PR strategist and top diver to boot

Go easy on scuba steve irl. He reads stuff on Wiki then quotes it as fact.

This is entirely normal behaviour for a project manager

PS - There's a lovely t-shirt out there captioned "I still call it Hogarthian". I don't think they're referring to gin-addled soaks.

1. Even JJ says in DVD's and interviews that he did DIR a great thing, in a totally obscure way. He tested people's ideas, well to the point they wanted to swap his steroids for something a bit more fatal. But he did get the message out there to people. And even if you don't like anything remotely DIR you have to admit the plague has spread well in the last few years.

2. Is the last dig at me ? If the last sentence is a dig at me then you compared a skinny mouthy 19 year old who enjoys diving to a fat over roided 40year old who hates anyone who doesn't enjoy diving, oh and most that do.

Plus he's my illegitimate father.....

Er. No. I don't think you and George (Trey) Irvine III are quite in the same league yet..

I heartily recommend everyone with an interest in tech diving to read "Mixed Gas Diving" by Mount, Gilliam et al and "Deep Diving" by Brett Gilliam. Both are extremely good at establishing the time line on the development of what is tech diving.
I've used the old quote "Standing on the shoulders of giants" in the past

But as for his sucsess in promoting DIR........ Well love him or hate him, he got that one nailed
