this is where a thread like this gets dodgy, IMHO.

Someone comes along and says what they did. Someone elses judges it, and someone elses judges the judger. (am I making sense?)

The point isn't whether it was right/wrong/silly/regrettable in anyone elses view except Vonny's.

We have all done things we perhaps shouldn't have done, but having someone pat us on the back for doing it, which then degenerates into poo-flinging (i like that expression ) isn't good, really.

I have done stuff that, on reflection, was silly. I once drove down the M40 at nearly a hundred and got squished. I know it was silly, and I wouldn't do it again - we learn from our mistakes, and if we are lucky, we learn from other peoples.

Sorry...my 2p

I know I am cautious but if you take minimum gas out of the equation, you can go much deeper for much longer, so why this namby pambying about at 45m doing this in clear warm water when there are loads of equally safe thrills to be had much deeper?

As Mr Garf. would say...."What could possibly go wrong?"
Mal
I didn't (I went to 60 or the max depth on air for a safe PPO2) it was PV that stopped at 45m. As it happened I was diving regularly at that time (otherwise, "it" wouldn't have happened) and felt confident in my limits and abilities. Not that it is of any relevance but there were 3 other people of the same opinion (about themselves).

Pooflinging? Moi? Certainly not. I have not insulted Mal (I hope / certainly not intended) in any way nor have I been insulted by him. If Mal is cross or seriously pissed off then we can stop the debate ........... it really matters not as I know for a fact that nothing I say will change his opinion. Nor will it change mine but it is fun, for me, to go through these debates occasionally.

I've been diving since 2001. Padi MSD for 3 years.
Deepest dive to date was on 23 May 2006 on the Rosalie Moller at 36.4m.
Not intended but I had some buddy trouble: Oh Buddy

I've done 35m in lanzarote last spring. Then there are quite a few at 30/32m, perhaps that's my comfort zone.

I wouldn't want to go any deeper on a single 12 without a very good reason, i.e. an emergency/rescue (ooer, that sounds like a new thread!). It's always no-stop bottom time that discourages me from going deeper. No point in dashing down to 40+ on a12l to do nothing but look at the 'puter readout for a couple of minutes. I'd like to do some advanced nitrox/deco/twins training but right now time and money kinda restrict my diving to holidays only. Though I need to wet my regs that I've just picked up from service before I do TurkeyLurkey in June so I'll have to do a crappers in the very near future.

What was the question?

Paul

This is the thingy part of the argument and diff in character (I suspect) between me'n Mal. Do you see the problem being that you drove at a ton or that you squished?

I would not see a problem with you having driven at a ton, only that you messed up somehow and should learn not to mess up again. Most people, these days, will just say you were wrong to go over 70, period.

I do not presume to think I have any idea what Mal would think but I'm just using your example to explain the fundamentals of our diff of opinions (as I see it).

Morag,

My concern is not with the judgement part (there are no dive police) .... just a genuine sorrow that depth seems to be the only thing the "industry", reflected in a thread like this, seems capable of promoting ... I did apologise for being grumpy about it but it does not change the fact that I feel there is too much pressure to go too deep too quickly ..... and usually without the appropriate training.

So a "cheeky" bounce to 4Xm often gets referred to as being an acceptable thing to do .... but as I am sure you will agree, repitition reduces your chances of "getting away with it" and that's hard to explain to some people.

I would also put properly executed deep dives in a different category.

Mal

Don't row over it though. I am bad and I did wrong. End of.
I tried parallel parking once too. It was touch and go, but I survived

I also did the first arch at Thomas, Tiran on a 15 but with two very experienced divers. Did not appreciate how narced I was down there until back on the boat. If when at 45m the two guys had said lets go down to the next arch I would have happilly followed, something I would not even contemplate with a clear head.

Deepest: 41m, Single 12l, Looking for Mola Mola off Bali.

Last dive: 10.3m, Twin 10's, Swan river this afternoon.

The only reason i'd go 'deep' is if there was something to see down there, so far in my dive career there hasn't been.

Besides if i died diving my wife would kill me!
