New Dogs Name

I want to call the newf (big black dog) Nigger and my wife has said no



now before you go off on one i was namming him after this for those who dont know

We're planning to get a Newf later in the year when we've finally moved house!!!

We're planning for a black girl and are going to call her Catalina (after a place in Newfoundland)

Otherwise... Brown Boy called Branston (like the pickle! )


I've just asked if we can call him / her nigger instead and am now nursing a sore ear so no, apparently 'we' wouldn't

It's all well and good having a very good reason for the name if you end up being questioned by the police about racism, but a group of offended youths may not ask your reason, they might just dish out their own justice and even if they do ask first, whether they'd listen to and accept the reason is another matter.

Seems like an unnecessary controversy to me. And what was acceptable in 1943 isn't so now, just as Robertsons had to get rid of the Gollywog.

As I'm sure you know, the word nigger stems from the Latin 'niger' meaning black (as in the colour, not the race). The French word 'noir' and the Spanish 'negro' are modern derivatives.

Back in the 'good old days' when Guy Gibson called his dog Nigger; the word, in the UK at least, didn't have quite the perjorative meaning it has now.

As far as I'm concerned, it's probably the most offensive word a white person could use, in any situation. And it's the only word I never use, apart from academic discussion.

Knowing you Graham, I'm sure that you'd like to use the name for your dog as a tribute to the Dambuster's usage (it was also used as a code word for the raid). Sadly, I think it would be unwise to use the word now.

The whole argument about the use of 'nigga' in modern black culture is something that's best left for black people to persue.
