I have to say, I am pretty sure that any distaste I may feel over selling my story would be pretty quickly wiped out by £500k. That would pay off my mortgage, still leave an absolute stack of cash and probably mean I could do alot of things I wouldn't ever be able to even dream of doing otherwise.

I agree however that a donation to the rescue service - if they are a charity like our RNLI - would be on the list.

perhaps now they can afford proper training/kit or a dive guide (said in some jest )

I think the million bucks payout for the story is an exaggeration too, from what I can gather, it's a few thousand $, no more.

That's my thought exactly. It's not that exciting of a story for general public. Doesn't make it any better. Maybe there should be a new Padi categorally of Vulture speciality, get lost, get rescued, sell story to highest bidder. (Apologies for vultures who have higher sense of self belief)
