Sponkelpumps are not really my thing. Krinz-Shorphten made a far better machine IMO.

That is the remains of a Spark Arrestor from a sample hatch on ships tank. Sorry to spoil the fun guys.
They are used to prevent the ignition of gases in ships tanks when the hatches are opened.

Basicly its just a lot of that corrugated material wound into a disk, the rods are put through it to help hold it all together. In the top of a ships tanks which hold flamable liquids there are sample hatches. These are usually about 6 inches in diameter and are there so that when said ship reaches the port to dischage its cargoe the sample hatch is opened so that a sample can be taken before the product is discharged to the shore tanks. These would help prevent the flash back from an ignition entering the ships tanks.
