Your theory sounds completely plausible, because the noise started after Turbs fiddled with the first stage (he's a qualified Scubapro technician so is allowed to).

When I first switched from A-clamp to DIN I'm sure that breathing sounded "different". I think that now I'm used to the DINs that my wife noise filter has stepped in an filtered that too.

I've always dived with DIN, but the theory about the servicing having jiggled something sounds plausible to me.
