I had an e-mail from Lee & Niv Findlay who were on the boat at the time. The compressor operator has been arrested. I understand Gundi Holm has left the Maldives.

Such a sad episode...

I understand that the Compressor operator (21 years old) has been arrested, but surely as some of the other reports say, the Tour / Liveaboard operator should be held for a proportionate amount of blame on this.

Even though it still doesn't bring one diver back from the dead....

Richard, Using a plastic bag to collect the gas would be fine. Its a recognised way of collecting air samples for analysis. I'd be most concerned if there was any detectable CO in the air. The tubes are usually calibrated for a fixed known volume of gas, as long as you get roughly the right amount of gas the measurement would be fit for purpose.

Call me old-fashioned but I think divers have the right to assume they will not be poisoned by the gas supplied in their tanks.

BJ.

Thanks for this post (should it be under compressors and maintenance?)
Enclosed pictures of the boat and the Bauer Mariner 320 compressor in question. (police photo) the air intake hose can be seen taped up twice.

Tragedy is further compounded by the arrest of this young boy. The lad in the picture, probably Bangladesh and is the cheap labour, he can be seen operating the compressor for the police with no belt guard, and you can bet no compressor operators manual, no SOP, no filter maintenance schedule. I would be surprised if he understands what carbon monoxide is.
While the boat operator, got to leave the country that night.

Also look at this Bauer compressor at 320l/min running in a hot climate, petrol driven it's a new and non-modified model using the same tiny filter cartridge normally found on small 150l/min compressors. Again do we blame the poor lad for the inadequate filter tower, or the manufacturer Bauer of the compressor for inadequate filtration? Or the boat operator for purchasing adequate equipment at the cheapest possible price?

Is this different to the UK when compressor operators are classed as a “filling Monkey” or that the “product” is so devalued and so diminished to a point that it is with some LDS it is given away for “Free”. Your call.
