One of the early reports of their survival had the divers beating the dragons back with a weightbelt, which I thought showed splendid presence of mind i.e.,

"I've been floating at sea for hours but be buggered if I'll drop my weightbelt as goodness knows what I'll have to fend off when I get ashore"

There's British pluck for you

Thing is he Komodo is fast moving and agile. They can climb trees and like all monitor lizards they are good swimmers.

They are wonderful creatures but still would not like to stumble accross one in the heat of the day when they are feeling a bit peckish.

Also they can eat 80% of there body weight in a single feeding - or half a Howard

A Komodo Dragon is an animal, just as we are animals and let's not forget that last.

Come to think of it, we animals are doing very well at raping and pillaging this planet we are meant to co-exist on. The Komodo, as all other animals (than us) is solely interested in food. Yes I know, you could make some exceptions, such as blood lust, but that's so rare as to be statistically unrecordable - that is, except in the case of us humans.

Co-exist? If we don't, we'll die, mercifully I won't be around to see that happen - in fact most of us won't but we're trying pretty hard to get there.

Where I grew up, in what is now called Sri Lanka, they have the monitor lizard which is a pretty big beast indeed and treated with a great deal of respect, if not awe. Here in Oz we also have fairly big lizards that we treat with respect, even though they're nowhere near the same size as the Komodo or the Monitor. As for septicaemia and the Komodo, try some of our poisonous things which will definitely kill you (and pretty bloody quickly at that) and, yes, Komodos can and will be driven off quite easily by those other animals called humans, provided those have at least a scrap of presence of mind.

For heaven's sake, Komodos and most other lizards, especially the large ones, are scavengers firstly and hunters only by happenstance, the victim is often already severely debilitated. That also happens in the case of sharks - just think shark feeding. Can you think of any animal at all that kills simply for decorative purposes? Apart from us humans?

The context was one of what it was like to survive a long drift and then come up on a beach only to become prey to a large and dangerous predator. Of course, in their place Komodo dragons are very cuddly.

jb,

I know where you're coming from and you know where I'm coming from.

I simply don't believe that a Komodo, even if they met an exhausted human as described above is going to present much of a problem.

Then again, some, perhaps a lot of us, simply have no idea how to handle wild life.

Sad innit? You and I grew up at a different time.
