Dive Buddies Abroad
Hi,

I'm off on a family Holiday to Turkey in a couple of weeks and although Mrs. W is also a diver we are going to have to diver separate to look after the kids.

From past experience I've met some great people ...... I've also been used as a nanny for very inexperienced divers who I've had to watch rather than enjoy my diving..... I don't mind some of this but I dont want to be at it all week as this is my holiday. I honestly really enjoy helping newer divers stay enthusiastic and give them tips but I also want to chill out a little.

So how do you say no to this without causing friction and upsetting the diver involved (not their fault after all)?

I dont want to withold any certs or information about my experience..... as I understand it this can get you into trouble if there is an incident.

Speak to the dive operator before you go out on the day. Explain that you are on holiday and that you want to chill. If they still then give you a novice to dive with, go with another operator.

Works for me.

When they ask to see your cert card, just give them the AOW one and say no more.

Where you goin chris? EDC in fethiye were very good at pairing up buddies when i was there a coupla years back. They put experienced divers together, a guide would keep an eye on you for a dive to be sure you knew your shit then leave you alone while they go and supervise the holiday divers.

In the past this has happened to me, I now explain that if they want to use me to nanny another diver then I won't be paying for my diving.

Hi Sean,

I'm off to Altinkum ...............

I don't think EDC operate out of there. There is only one dive Center by the look of it .....

I assume that you are a dive professional then. I can't see how withholding cert cards as an amateur can lead to any problem. If it can I'd like to hear about it as I do quite a lot when diving abroad!
