I found the following:

Mares Abyss 22 - £250
Mares Abyss 42 - £320
Apeks ATX40 DS4 - £99
Poseidon XStream - £150

Now there are a big difference in these prices - is there a big difference in performance? I've had a Mares Abyss and it was superb but you can get a ATX40 for £150/£220 cheaper!

Are we sometimes sucked in on paying top dollar for dive kit - because "How much is your life worth?"

Obviously its not just regs, there are many other instances of a massive price difference but it has got me wondering if dive kit can be equated to cars?

Is a Abyss a Merc and a ATX40 a Ford?

Is an OThree a BMW and a Predator a VW?

Makes you think eh..........................Or well at least it does me!

I think alot of people get the same kit as their instructors / buddies have... the mind set being they are good divers and i wanna be like them ( well that what padi say )

Pesonaly i get kit that is best suited for the diving i do regs especialy!!... i would go with Apeks any day of the week... they were origionaly designed by a british engineer that dives and are designed for "cold" UK diving... as for the rest of my kit..well that is all Nothern Diver but that is cos im close to where they are, and i get a good deal with them I have a cortex and a divemaster dry suit from them (didnt get on with the cortex felt too much like mitchelin man) Like my DM suit...ok its not the best in the world but i find it comfy and not too restricting and the price is ok too.

I think thats absolutely spot on in some respects - Its exactly what I did with my first pair of fins (Avanti Quattros - I still use Quattros today but not the same pair )

It's a good job I have slightly more sense than money (thats not saying much!) as I would really love a Porsche Cayenne.

Anyway, now the Godive deal has gone it levels the playing fiels a bit from my original post.

A Mares Abyss 22 will cost you around £280 and a Apeks XTX50 is around £280, so I guess both quality regulators and as you can see a similar price. So in some ways this really says there isn't a lot of difference in price between top performing regs. The difference is when a store has a bargain deal going that the balance changes.
