I have a Uniden 1W/5W Atlantis 250 hand held VHF, cost me abiout $140 off ebay, it's the only type sold at the local marine suppliers too, so I think it's reputable. It has a rechargeable battery and a spare holder that takes 6 (I think) AAs for backup.

I found that I could talk to our club boat, which has a proper fixed marine VHF, from 3kms away quite happily on 1W. Dunno what the full range is but I can talk to Hobart Coast Radio, 15kms away from my house, although there is a repeater on a hill about 8kms away.

It's pretty handy as an auxilliary and lasted all this weekend on a battery that was only displaying 60% charge. Talk:Standby was probably 1:99, if that, but you don't use VHF for idle chitchat anyway. I even had a conversation whilst in the little boys room of the house we rented, about 2kms away and on the other side of a granite hill from the dive site.
    Doing It Richard

I have a few faults but being wrong isn't one of them.

I wouldn't worry, just take some AA batteries.

We use a Standard Horizon Submersible HX270E - recommended by our local dealer who supplies the RNLI; is rechargeable and able to 'dive' to a modest distance.

ICOM m33. It's waterproof and floats. I use it for rescue work and love it.
