The trouble is Frosty that the method you may have in mind is counter productive.

We may end up expending more heat and energy than we conserve !

I'm starting to think about shutting down the house and moving into the poultry ark with the hens.........if only they had Sky.....

Yes, because doing star jumps would make the hot water bottle fall out.

I know this doesn't help you at all and I'm all for keeping warm at this time of year.

I have been using storage heaters and a single gas fire for the last 25 years and am more than happy with the arrangement. We are both at home now all day and have not seen any major increase in fuel since finishing work. I've also thrown out my tumble drier and now put the washing on the rack at night and the following morning it's dry.

The house is toasty warm all night and until about 4 pm at which time I turn on the gas fire on low for the remainder of the evening. No maintenenance for the storeage heaters at all.

We use economy 7 for electricity.

Anyhow, I hope you manage a satisfactory solution.

    Cheers

Ok the boring answer from somebody who has had to design heatings sytems

modern builings U values mean that the fabric of materials used in teh construction of houses these days should ensure that the thermal conduction of heat through these materials is slower. Which should mean that the heat emitted by "radiators" should be retained longer within the house. Are we still awake

the modern heating systems should be designed with a external temp of -4/5degrees and a heat rise of internal temperatures for say 'habitable rooms' lounges, dining rms to be 21 degrees with a heat up period of 1 hour.

if the external temp is ower than -4/5 then the warm up period is extended.
the best solution if the outside temp is constantly lower than the design temp WAKE UP would be to leave the heating set to say 15degrees on the room thermostat which would maintain a constant internal temp during a non occupied period which would then decrease the optimum heating up period during normal occupancy IMHO

All of the above is assuming that you can afford to run the heating for these prolonged periods

Other wise save the money of the running costs visit annsummers.com and have a few early nights

any more usless information required just ask

Fitting a wood burner is good if you have a source of free wood otherwise it can get quite expensive.

Set the room thermostats to about 16C and if you are still cold do some vacuuming around the house or even, shock horror, put on another layer. I must admit when you get people on TV whinging about being cold and having to put the heating on I find my own temperature rising as it is not too hard to keep warm - put more clothes on or clothes appropriate to the conditions (sounds like diving doesn't it).

As far as the cats are concerned they will be toasty anyway as they have a fur coat issued as standard.

Of course it goes without saying.

Yep. Dress appropriately is my motto at work. I don't take complaints about being cold from folk in shirtsleeves is another.

We find our woodburner at home, running coal, costs about 80p a day for about 4-5hrs a day heating. Of course, getting free wood when we can brings that down.

So, by my reckoning we'd need 2 tons to cover the transport costs
