Being a whippersnapper (everything's relative before anyone comments!) I didn't see it the first time round, so I'm keen to see it and know what you're all on about.

Lou's got a point about not wanting to give the impression that some of his actions are acceptable these days though, by the sound of it. Maybe if it were released quietly so most who buy it are divers who already understand. Not that that's likely I guess.

To pick up on Wacker's post yesterday about "the hat of Jacques" - in order to boost sales if you buy the entire collection you should qualify for a free red Jacques C hat ..... or depending upon your view

or being a little bit more serious, a percentage of the retail price could go to the MCS?

of course as well as the "hey kids, don't destroy the wildlife" message there should also be a "don't dive deep on air; okay it might be funny but it is not big or clever".

Regards

Simon

Oh dear! I fear I have blasphemed. Whether that was against Jacky-boy or Ainsley Harriot I don't know but I did get a red mark for it! Anonymous too......

Maybe if I just jump up and down and shriek in delight that would be better??

It is a good idea to have a percentage go to a conservation charity. With that and a foreword as previously suggested I would change my vote to "yes"...or maybe "maybe". Nothing if not decisive!

Jacque's Book

I recently bought "The Silent World" on eBay - it's one of the best diving books I've ever read; made even more scary when you realise just how new the whole sport was back then. In fact, I'm going to look it out when I get home tonight and spend a few hours by the fire reading it again!

ScubaStu saw the sea in a book once
I would love to see them again, 26 years ago, when I first started diving, they were my sole inspiration to getting into diving.
But as some people have already said maybe they would have to be released with a warning about some of the techniques employed by Jacques and his boys. Not just on film (bang sticks etc), but off film it's well documented that to get some of the underwater film he used cyanide to kill fish, and at one point he wanted to gain access to part of The Great Barrier Reef that Calypso could not get to, so he blew part of the reef away.........to allow her passage.
Thankfully we know better now, and if they inspire more people to learn to dive, all the better. It would be down to us as existing divers to promote ecologially sound diving techniques.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it

I did see the series the first time round but it would be nice to see it in colour!

I think the majority of people will be able to appreciate that values were different when this was filmed and it will make us all more appreciative of how far we have progressed.

I didn't really watch any of his stuff (its an age thing and let's face it the excitement factor of watching somebody looking at fish and stuff just didn't compare to the excitement factor of Dr Who and Star Wars and footy - but what the hell did I know I was young enough to think that Dr Who was real). I have his book about the underwater habitat and have given it a flick through but TBH it was a little odd that he did things like visiting the damn thing by using a sub instead of just diving down the 12m to the entrance. He liked a bit of theatre it seemed - but then, so do the Wreck Detectives.

Having said that I would like to see the series now and the Hans Hass stuff. All with an unbiased documentary review both of them, their achievements and methods. Now that would be interesting.

Hi all,

Now i am obviously far to young to remember it but my grandfather told me about it.

Now really i sat enthralled by it all, and we have to remember it was a different age and pioneering stuff. Just like the James Bond diving scenes, you look at the kit in Thunderball now and think "Bloody 'ell"

Bit like us now, i did not start that long ago and Octo's were new, many divers did not have one. Now its looked at the same way as not having a Pony. Attitudes and Knowledge i find tend to move ahead together. But Pioneers in a field must be given credit and leeway.

Know what you mean. I'm reading it just now, and know I'll pick it up again in a few months time. Amazing to think how our sport and equipment has advanced since the book was written.(and our views on diving and conservation)

Ahh yes,

My eldest daughter (7) has it by her bed and reads it a lot. She also took it into school for show and tell and the teacher said she gave a very good presentation about diving and the Undersea World.

Ahhh she also did one on Lobsters and how dad brings them home and how they chase her and her little sister around the garden before we eat them.

Dive safe

Paul
