Is wearing the mask on your forehead ( at the surface) a sign of diver in distress?
Not sure if its just a myth but some divers seem to hate it?

It's supposed to be a sign of panic as it's one of the first things a distressed diver does upon surfacing (that, and taking his/her reg out).
I recently saw a stressed diver on the surface and, sure enough, his mask was on his forehead, so I guess it must be true.
If you aren't panicking, probably better to slip your mask under your chin, if you really must take it off. Saves losing it, too.
If you have to think about it for more than thirty seconds, you probably shouldn't get in.
Team Ladydive
PADI used to teach it as a sign of distress. Not sure what they do currently.

~KINKY DIVERS~
Because going down is fun
Now known as No. 1 son of a pikey diver........ Oh the shame of it
We are all prompted by the same motives, all deceived by the same fallacies, all animated by hope, obstructed by danger, entangled by desire and seduced by pleasure. Welcome to Kinky Divers!
Fascinating thread because I had my first try dive yesterday and had a panicky moment and that's exactly what I did when I surfaced too!!
Tend to leave mine on until everyone is out of the water. You never know.
Comes in handy in the kitchen too sometimes.![]()
Its in the PADI openwater diver manual pg156, i always tell divers that it can be a sign of a diver panicking but also tell them if they get into the habit of putting their mask on their forehead there is a good chance a wave will dispatch it to the bottom of the sea, bad news as it hurts the wallet.
