    Plymouth/Torpoint sites?

The missus and me are currently down in Torpoint for a two week break and we're booked onto a boat for a few dives but want to get some shore dives in.

Does anyone know of any good shore dives in the general area and the best/safest time to dive them as well as any other advice?

    Cheers,

    Nik

    You're spoiled for choice

Up the coast a bit, around Torbay you've got Babbacombe (which is a lovely site), Brixham Breakwater Beach and Meadfoot Beach to name a few.

Coming down the coast towards Plymouth, you've got Hope Cove, Thurlestone (for the wreck of the Louis Shied), Bovisand Harbour, Plymouth Waterfront, Firestone Bay and Devil's Point (if you're feeling adventurous - but be careful when you dive these last two sites as they're very, very tide-dependant and lie right on the shipping channel out of the Naval Base).

As you're in Cornwall (just) you could try Basket Rock or Hannafore Point at Looe, or Talland Bay.

No matter which direction the wind's blowing, you'll be able to dive at at least one of these sites. Obviously they're all best done on high tide but a few are do-able on low tide as well.
If you have to think about it for more than thirty seconds, you probably shouldn't get in.

Couple of my favourite dives at Devils Point and Millbay Pit, but they have caught a lot of people out - definitely worth getting the advice/assistance of a local, I ended up half way out to Drake's Island in a choppy sea.

You also need to notify Longroom if you're going in, as they will advise if anyone's planning to come through there - it's a route for the submarines etc and you really don't want to see one of those on a dive.

    Digs.

Absolutely right. We dived Devil's Point last night and the Longroom made us wait 30 mins to let a Naval vessel go past.

Heeheee that was my only dive with you, the reply from the Long was a classic. The conversation went a bit like this.

Me "Hi longroom we have a diver on the surface in the shipping channel between Firestone Bay and Drakes Island"

    Longroom "Does he look distessed?"

How the hell could I see! Quick conversation with others present and we took a guess at.....No

Me" No longroom he looks happy"

Longroom" OK we'll ring you back in half an hour to see how he is. Thanks for the call."

Yes they did ring back..... about 45 minutes later. By which time everybody was ashore.

Definitely a bad call. I was distinctly distressed at the thought of a bloody long swim against the current!

At least I had my SMB with me, I reckoned at least if I got carried out to sea someone would pick me up at the breakwater

Thanks for the replies. Went out to Looe and Talland Bay today for look and will probably give them a go next week. Going to have go at Cawsand / Kingsand and Pier Cellars too and hopefully get some scallops.

    Cheers,

    Nik

    Torpoint

    Hi Nik,

I live in Torpoint, I dive on a hard boat ( leaving from plymouth) for a single evening dive on Tuesday weather permitting. If your interested.

Talland, Looe/Basket Rock, Portwrinkle are all reasonable or good. There is a diveable wreck at Talland.

Dive mag has had a recent article on Cawsands.

PM me if you are interested and I'll send you my phone number.

    PS where are you staying?

    Neill
