Technology: Discuss Windows XP SP2 in the Non-Diving Related Forums forums: I think the issues are more to do with network systems that use routers / WAPs...

Angry

Installed it on 1 PC out of a 3 PC network at my mates house. He uses one for broadband and has firewalls and the usual on it, the other two we just use as games machines. We were running SP1 on all 3 but he decided to upgrade the main one to SP2, network speed, connections dropping, lockups, the whole thing has gone to the dogs!!

Definately one to give a miss.

Interesting...

I installed XP (SP2) on my main machine to see what happens and it all just works. DHCP is from a Win2K server and I don't use the Windows firewall.

I am sorta interested in trying to create the DHCP problem and sniffing the conversation to see what is going wrong.

SQL doesn't like it much either

Have been getting loads of tech support calls along the lines of

Punter: Your software's conked out!
Rob: How exactly?
Punter: The clients can't access the server's database any more.
Rob: So what have you changed?
Punter: NOTHING!........Oh........the office techy did put SP2 on.
Rob: Well phone him up, tell him that he's broken your system and to bloody well get down and un-break it.

<sigh>

No problems here - but I connect to the router over ethernet, rather than USB

System hangs

I have installed SP2 on two of my laptops, no problems with UTP or WLAN (though static IP on both so no DHCP issue), the only problem I have experienced is that one of the laptops will hang usually once per day. I have noticed that this seems to be connected with IE somehow. Apart from that no problems.

Lol. You lot must be nuts. I keep at least a service pack behind on all the office machines and let everyone who rushes in find the issues. Unless an SP contains functionality required, or security enhanced desperately needed, I don't bother moving to it. Satan will be skating to work before I let it near our production environment.

What's very amusiung about SP2 that microsoft's new flagship product Microsoft CRM, stops working immediately if you upgrade.

There are also issues with the .net framework that require an immediate hotfix post-install of the SP
Gotta love mass public beta

I haven't had an issue at all on the machines that I've put it on but I will say that if you have a firewall already set up on the network and probably configured then you don't really need the local Win XP firewall that SP2 installs. Turn it off, there are rescources in the TechNet web site for doing this without getting the annoying system tray warning all the time.

Still, if you are a glutton for punishment and want to keep it on (and be warned, it does munch some CPU cycles!) make sure you know your port assignments. Microsoft has a list of the common ones here .

HTH

PS Jay, do you have TCP/67 and TCP/68 open on the firewall of the effected SP2'd machines?
