Apart from here at work (We use Firewalls and VPNs) I've not personally really had any use for Fixed IP on a home broadband connection, thus my lack of knowledge in that area.

I pay 1and1 to host my domains / e-mail with Anti-virus etc.. so I don't have anything at home I want to connect to on a regular basis. Working in IT means I don't really want the hassle when I get out of the office!!

What Bantam says.

Plusnet is the way to go, I've been with them for over a year and am very happy with them, customer service is good too. The £14.99 option is cheaper than most dial ups and 20 times quicker! Go for it, 1Gb of download is a lot unless you download a shed load of music or video.

Consultancy company, so I'm au fait with the infrastructure and techie detail - all I wanted to know is who uses what and why but thanks for the responses. Zen internet - they are the best. Check them out on ADSLguide. I have their 1meg service and it is very good.

All these posts are depressing me, I have to pay around £110/month for a 128kbps Satellite link, no sign of DSL or cable in our village. Mind you, some of the houses haven't got electricity so not entirely surprising.
