Simple answer then - at the airport, pop into Dixons, buy one at a bargain price, turn round and present it to her saying 'sorry I didn't have time to wrap it'!

Yes, mate had one on Sat - very sleek looking gadget.
If my mobile (c500) didn't already have built in mp3, I'dbe having one of these Nano's.

Dave.

Nah, not much of a gift like that - it'll be empty and uncharged and she'll be looking at it all holiday saying "well, it's lovely, but I can't use it until we get home. Why didn't you put some music on it?"

Dixons tax free have a web site, but doesn't look finished yet.
http://www.dixonstaxfree.co.uk
£5 web voucher and pre-ordering service to guarantee stock are worth a look.

Now a better present would be being presented with a nice bit of dive bling in the departure lounge!

Unfortunately, the camera connector has a limited compatibility list published by Apple.

Removing the card from the camera and plugging it into a memory card reader and then directly into the camera connector USB port has the same result = "unsupported device"

Has anybody got the iPod and camera connector to work with a memory card reader device (i.e. outside of the camera)? and if yes, what card reader did you use?

thanks
I've given up trying to get this to work with the Sea&Sea DX5000G, as it's obviously the camera that's not talking the right language for the iPod camera connector.

I picked up a Belkin Media Reader from Curry's for a reduced price and this works a treat. Unfortunately, it's another device to carry and needs 4x AAA batteries, so my global charger will be kept nice and busy charging up batteries for the camera and the iPod now!

Exclamation I dont know if it's on this post

The best places to get music are:

1. For extremely cheap: www.allofmp3.com

2. Nonexistent cheap: www.limewire.com

I go with www.allofmp3.com, even though its based in Russia it's very reliable/proffessional site and albums work out at a couple of quid and less sometimes!

Except both of the above are illegal download sites. Even allofmp3 which gets around Russian law by paying a token fee to the russian copyright co's (but not to the musicians).

It seems very easy to download music and it's a faceless theft, but it's theft nonetheless. The musicians, engineers, producers and so-on have produced a product which they want to make a living from. If you download the song from an illegal source, you're not giving the artist the respect they're due.

Don't get me wrong - I think the music industry is in for a wake up call and most of the record companies are money-grabbing fat cat industry, but that doesn't mean that stealing the music by downloading it is justified.

(Mark - who has 8200 tracks on his iPod and abour 4000 CD's which are all legal.)

Tell me this, why is it more expensive to buy music in the UK online from iTunes than it is say in France and the States etc? Because they can get away with it. Is it illegal, I would say under any fair trading regulations it's definitely pushing the boundaries. Thats why I don't use ITunes.

Is it legal for Apple to ship IPODs with a known fault, I don't think so! In the States they replaced 1.3 million users after been threatened with a law suit. Did they fix my 400 quid ipod when its battery stopped working, no they did'nt. For some reason UK users have different rights to American users of IPODs.

You know why I use allofmp3, because I can (just like Apple can do the above). Would I prefer to get my music direct from the musicians, on an equal footing with other nations, yes I would? Is there anything I can do about it, no!

So we exist in this status quo of multinatonals flauting the rules and the people who download music from these sites also flauting the rules, but the people get labelled White Collar criminals! And the mutlinatonals keep on getting away with it!

I would be careful going on a moral crusade before looking at the wider picture, a change is required on both sides. Not just by the people! I presonally think most of the people that download music from these sites cannot get what they want fairly elsewhere or feel that most of it goes to the record companies executives anyway!

But again this is a wider moral issue which relates to the way modern society works, indifference faced when dealing with faceless companies and each other! A bit like the way you politely (and indirectly) judge me to be an illegal downloader, without exploring the issues at hand or even knowing me!

Yes many people feel passionate about criminal elements in society being supported by so called illegal duplication of music, but it's just like drugs and illegal importing of ciggarettes. If the government make's a market for it then what can we do!

As Bren will testify to from being assaulted during Skype calls that most of my music is so obscure anway that I can only get it from DJ mate's or unusual outlets anyway!

Bren can you run a poll please, Do people think we in Britain get treated fairly when buying music?

Had my nano (a.k.a. bob) for 2 weeks now and I am still in lurve. Bernard, my very old (3+years) 20Gig Generation 2 iPod is sulking by my computer. He has no reason to sulk - I recently installed a rather cool replacement battery and I now get well over 20 hours on a charge which is excellent for long flights.

bob the 4Gb black nano though is something else. It's kinda cool playing with all the new features my old iPod doesn't have, like the colour screen and on-the-go playlists and stuff.

Erm, there has to be a reason for this pointless rambling. Or does there? Yes - iPods are the same price in China as they are here! So my recommendation is not to go to China to get one. That would be silly.

Troc.

PS check out my podcast on iTunes.
PPS One day I'll say something interesting. I might even chat about diving in holland.

BBC running a story today about nano screens scratching easily and cracking.

My 60Gb photo is safe in its silicon case, but the screen picks up scratches easily.

The white cover is safely inside the silicon, but still has scratches 'cos grit gets under the silicon cover and chafes.

Is there any good cleaning method to get rid of the scratches, or do you just accept them as signs of use?

Also, does anybody use any 3rd party applications instead of iTunes?

I want to be able to copy my music off iPod onto my work PC, and also sync with Outlook at work. looking at anapod explorer at the minute, but not sure if it'll let me use the iPod with 2 computers.
