How to get proper licenced MS software for virtually nowt if you are an SME

Microsoft do this thing called an Action Pack Subscription. £199 per year but you have to convince them that you are an IT consultant or reseller or something to do with IT.

Then they send you 10 not for resale licences of all of their software for internal use. Everything. Server 2003 Standard, Web and Premium, Office, Visio, Frontpage, CRM, Exchange.......

We've been doing this for years. you have to read the licensing a little carefully as a lot of the software can only be used for demo or development /testing purposes, but you really do get everything.

We've had this for a while now and its fantastic for testing etc.

You only get one or two copies of the server OS's but you do get 10 license keys for XP Pro and office etc.

The only thing you have to watch is the license agreement. If they catch you using this software in a production environment they get a bit upset.

Edit: Ahhh beat me to it by three minutes there lol

That sounds just the job for our tech office!

Are there any restrictions regarding length of use - ie they're not time-limited demo versions or somesuch? Can you apply service packs to them?

There not time limited at all and yes you can apply all the service packs to them. Plus it all comes in a nice big fat old case to keep everything together.

The one I got had two lots of CDs - the Full Monty you were only allowed to use as demos for customers and the Full Monty you can use in Production in your own company.

Watch the EULA though. Whilst I'm sure the one I got was Perpetual for my own use, later EULAs seem to show that the license is only valid if you buy another action pack the following year/when the one you have runs out. Confused? Welcome to MS Licensing...

The good news is they take service packs etc and run as the real McCoy - that's what they are.

Not really - the idea behind it is for small time companies and contractors that hawk M$ stuff to get the software to show to their customers without having to shell out $$$ for a full licence for the product they are trying to sell.

Of course, you could also work for a company that has Steve Ballmer on the board and have home access to the stuff anyway. After a couple of years you don't miss your soul ....
