Question What Spec ?

We received an email at work today which said "Tax Free computers as staff benefit".

Don't know much about how this is going to work until the pack comes through. But I have been told by Bren I need a new laptop so I can chat on Skype and maybe it will allow me to use the Infra Red thingy on the dive computer.

So what sort of spec should I be looking at. Bearing in mind my first laptop in 95 cost me £3k and was a 486DX. The current one has been upgraded but still hasn't got the welly.

I want something that will last me more than a couple of years.

Red face

Hi Fiona

Was this an internal e-mail? as I thought that scheme finished last year?

Regardless what you buy, you will be looking at around £600-£700 retail, unless you want something either very cheap, or very specific. Most people do not need to spend a grand on stuff they will never utilise. As for the IR port, these are becoming harder to get on laptops as WiFi and Bluetooth are all the rage, you may have to pick up a seperate adapter for around £20-£30.

Erm, sort of. It depends on the amount you spend on the laptop to be honest. Although its true that IR ports are being replaced in favor of Bluetooth and WiFi on some models, the more expensive ones do still tend to have them. It seems that users prefer bluetooth/WiFi to IR so IR tends to get left out as a bit of a cost saving move.
