Help my shiney new laptop won't boot-up!

I got given a fab new laptop for christmas which nearly had me in tears yesterday by deciding that it will no londeg turn on (having been used for less that a month )

It powers up and starts booting then just says disk read error and stops and nothing will make it get any further.

(doubly annoying as I've just done a new CV which am just about to start sending out).

Only things I've installed are OpenOffice, The Sims and an old favorite called dungeon keeper.

Does anyone have any advice?

Before someone comes along and says the hard drive has failed, just make sure you havent got a CD or floppy in when you are trying to boot it up

Eeek, sounds nasty. Stoopid question first - does the laptop have a floppy drive and is there a floppy disk in it?

EDIT: Nice one Garf, beat me to it. Faster and more informative

There's your problem then!

Does the battery charging indicator light when you plug it in to the mains?
Have you tried running it directly off the mains?
(stupid question) Is the battery in fully?

That doesn't sound right. The laptop should prevent the battery from being over charged. I'd also check the manual as some laptop models won't run without the battery being in (even if they're plugged into the mains).

Erm....it all sounds scary.

Did it come with a bootable disk of some form?

If so try booting off that and see what it says...maybe try looking for the main drive etc
