| Before someone comes along and says the hard drive has failed, just make sure you havent got a CD or floppy in when you are trying to boot it up |

| Eeek, sounds nasty. Stoopid question first - does the laptop have a floppy drive and is there a floppy disk in it? EDIT: Nice one Garf, beat me to it. Faster and more informative |

| No floppy dive, and nothing in the CD drive and no memory stick in the back either. It's DELL too so i thought it wouldn't be pants...... |

| OK, now do we tell her the hard drive's failed? |

Does the battery charging indicator light when you plug it in to the mains? Have you tried running it directly off the mains? (stupid question) Is the battery in fully?

| Plugged into mains. Currently battery out (so don't have repeat of my mums where she had it permently plugged into the mains and the battery in so the battery was permently charging for some reason and eventually would not hold a charge..... |
| ||||
| That doesn't sound right. The laptop should prevent the battery from being over charged. I'd also check the manual as some laptop models won't run without the battery being in (even if they're plugged into the mains).

| Don't really care too much about the overcherging thing as thats my mums which is fubbared. Has been working just fine without the battery in for the last week or so and just plugged into the mains........ |
| ||||
| Erm....it all sounds scary. Did it come with a bootable disk of some form? If so try booting off that and see what it says...maybe try looking for the main drive etc
