Converting CDs to MP3 Format

Hi all

I want to convert some CDs to MP3 format - do I have to buy some software to do this or are there any free converters I can download?

Recommendations for free or pay-to-use software greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Virtually any MP3 player software should allow you to do it though (itunes, musicmatch, whatever)

Try searching for Exact Audio Copy and the LAME MP3 encoder, a lot of people seem to rave about the combination for quality of ripped music.

Personally, I just use iTunes to rip to AAC for my iPod

CDex is what I use.

Quick and great quality including Ogg Vorbis.

I use dBpowerAMP Music Converter. Easy to use, different sample rates (choose between better quality/smaller file sizes), and free.

Or you could use Windows Media Player, which is already bundled with Windows.

But the encoder for MP3 isn't included! I bought mine via the MS website and it works a treat, but that was a couple of years ago now. There is free stuff out there that will do the same, but I'm used to WMP so stick with it.
Once installed, you just have to select the option to change what it rips as, i.e default WMA or MP3 (once encoder is installed).
Am happy to send you the encoder via email if you want it? (just over a 1.2MB)

I use iTunes set to VBR 192 kps (means the bitrate varies as and when needed but averages out at 192kps. Produces a far superior and well rounded sound for not much more hard drive space.

Whatever you do, don't install Music Match! You'll never get rid of it wothout a clean reinstall!
