Probably cause OS-X *is* Linux. (Well, Darwin). All Apple did was write a new GUI (Cocoa) to sit on top of the kernel, just like Gnome does. (I don't think they've got any Gnome code in it). Essentially, though, they did licence XTerm / XWindows (Sun, AT&T et. al.) so, to boil it down, it's an SVR4 box with a nice GUI.

If I remember correctly, wasn't Gnome based on the neXt platform GUI (another Steve Jobs thing), which is what in turn OSx was also based on?

Just like Microsoft did with NT (It's essentially an Intel version of DEC VAX with a nice GUI and a new file system!)

Sorry. Just talking shop. Nothing to see here.

This could run and run.

I believe that Microsofts term for stealing other peoples ideas is called "Embrace and Extend".

Usually this means copying it, ruining it and putting an "MS" in front of its name.

They really do have some bottle!

Still a bit more work to be done on it though - we installed a beta on one of our test machines a month or so ago and it reduced a 3.2GHz P4 with a gig of ram to a drooling, slobbering heap

I don't believe these were stolen, they were legitimately purchased and rebranded. This is very common practice in the software world, so what's the big deal?

Maybe but they probably worked better before Microsoft 'improved' them, that said I have no problems with Visio and its far easier to use and cheaper than Autocad

That's as maybe, but Microsoft buys small succesful software houses which have a great product, assimilates them and then the product roadmap disappears in a puff of smoke.

Great, My brother is going to love rubbing that in. He swears by Macs and reckons pc's are for doing things the hard way.
Is there any chance we will be able to run this thing without upgrading to a cray?Am I the only person that gets frustrated by having to upgrade because of all the whistle and bell upgrades that pile up on the system when I only need fairly basic functionality?

So?

Siebel and SAP do the same thing in the CRM world. Sage do the same thing in the Accounting World. Oracle do the same thing in the database world. such is business.
