| Its a bit late but FYI The VPI and VPC numbers don't make much difference. They are just virtual ID numbers. The usual trouble causer is the Encapsulation type. In the UK it should always be set on PPPoA (point to point protocol over atm). Usually the modems/routers default to PPPoE (point to point over ethernet). Although most of the current hardware can sort itself out, BT have been playing with PPPoE in lots of exchanges which confuses the hardware. I had one case where an exchange was flipping between the two protocols daily. It took about a week to get to someone in BT that knew anything about it. I don't know why anyone on ADSL broad band would use BT as an ISP. They are by far the worse I have to deal with.Their customer service is a joke. There are better deals, better networks and less routing issues with the mid size ISPs. |

I've just set one of these up for a friend, he'd set it up and it didnt work, and nothing I changed would make it work. However once I'd performed a hardware reset on it, and put in the right settings it worked fine. Simon A |

| There should be a small reset button on the back that you have to press with a pencil. Press and hold it in for about 5 seconds (untill the lights start flashing). Then re-enter all your settings and see how it goes.

| I set up with BT, having bought the wireless thingummy through them I phoned and they sorted it out in two minutes. I know that doesn't help directly, but it does mean that I have the settings they gave me written down somewhere. I will have a look tonight and PM them to you. C |

Now the fun begins 'cause you need to make it secure! (excuse me if this is teaching you to suck eggs) 1) change the SSID from the default ID (do not mention the make of the router) 2) Set the router so the SSID is not broadcast 3) change the password from the default 4)enable WEP (128 bit or higher) 5)Use a MAC address control list 6) change the WEP key every 30 days Simon A Last edited by Simon A : 11-02-05 at 09:29 PM. |
