Angry Bloody 'puters

Got to work last Friday to find that my profile was corrupt, yet again. Seems to be happening on a weekly basis. Takes our IT an age to sort it all out.
Told them that I would be back Monday and to have it sorted.
Came in today, had to use a different PC owing to a work colleague using my normal PC. Surprise, surprise I can't log in again as my profile is corrupt yet again.
Man from IT says it's coz we use different 'puters, I just call it total bull. Got to work just after 8, managed to log on at about 9:45. Fookin 'puters.

And to finish it all off I've got to reinstall my printers, mailboxes in Outlook. Oh nearly forgot, it also wiped my favourites clean too, so I've now got to try and remember what I had in there too!!!!

AAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

7 weeks to go to the tour. It'll take a week to destress then we'll be back at work!!!!

Rant over

A profile is specific to a local computer unless you set up roaming profiles which mean it can be used on any computer. Roaming profiles take about a minute to set up!

Thanks Nick, a simple answer, it just makes me wonder as to why we aren't roaming anyway!!!

It'll soon be a thing of the past, we are supposed to be getting IBM finkpads, T42 model. All singing and all dancing 3G etc etc.
Although seeing is believing!!!

Would that be the one that you had at LIDS earlier in the year?

No doubt, should it be that I have longer weekends?

Thats the one. Probably the best laptop I've ever owned.

FWIW I made the policy decision to change from Dell D600 laptops to IBM T42's about 6 months ago at our place because the Dells were ending up with abysmal return rates. About 90% of our fleet of D600 laptops have been serviced for one thing or another in the last couple of years. (Mainly hard disk failures or motherboard faults). In one case the dell engineer replaced a motherboard and nicked the Bluetooth module at the same time! We never got it back even though I called Dell loads of times.

The T42's are great. Reliable, bomb proof and quick - may not be the prettiest or cheapest thing out there, but takes alot of beating.

I just hope Lenovo don't break their good record.

(Saying that, I still prefer my Powerbook! )

On the subject of Roaming profiles - the biggest killer is people creating PST Archive files in Outlook and also (dependent on version) Internet Cache which it copies. (Plus saving to desktop as And pointed out).

I've recently learnt that you can streamline the roaming profiles by adding a registry entry to exclude certain subdirectories from the profile copy process which is mega helpful and speeds things up no-end.

Mark.
