But.....

It was REALLY slow until I added a default gateway under the advanced tab of the wireless TCP/IP properties on my laptop.

Presumably adding this default gateway will not stop / screw up the connection at a different location?

You should be able to push out a default gateway as part of the settings in the DHCP scope that you set up( (NT allows one for each different scope, not sure about your router).
It may really be the lack of a DNS server that was slowing stuff down and that the def gateway is also your DNS server now.

Presumption is the mother of all f**k ups.

Yes it will likely be a problem, see Paul's post above for a better idea of serving the default gateway in your DHCP configuration.

Update

Now think reported slowness was due to being near the limit of the range of the AP.

Took a brave pill and added a second AP (was given a two!) and now all is lovely and quick.
