What about some flux and a bit of Boss White?? Seriously tho', What do I need? I want to use my hard drives as these have mucho stuff on, mainly video that I need to edit. I have been told that if I get a motherboard with processor and plug my HD's in, then it will start up with everything as before, including my desk-top. Is this right?

| yes mate, as long as the problem isn't being caused by the hard drives in the first place. It really is just a case of pluggin it all in and switching on |

That's what I will do. I cant be doing with buying something and not playing so to get a complete system would not be wise as I would have the spanners/screwdrivers in there anyway. "You can do it when you 'zepp' it"

If you take the boot disk out of one computer and stick it in another, will the computer boot? Probably. But will it work properly? Probably not. All the other devices in the new computer won't be recognised by the OS - at least not straight away - and you'll also have loads of infor stored on the HD about devices on the old puter which you haven't now got. So it won't really be an optimium setup. And then there's Windows XP Product Activation. Moving the HD will be seen my Windows as having changed everything else and you'll be required to activate Windows again. You may or may not be able to do this (depends on whether your copy of XP is legal, if you can still find the CD/sticker thingy, or persuade MS that this is a genuine change and not a piracy attempt. Just a warning that it might not be that simple....

| Have a look in Programs\accessories\system\Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It's capable of backing up all your user data to a single file which can be written to CD or falsh drive. The problem with your freezing issue is that it is often caused by hard disks which are on the way out. There are plenty of other common possibilities which a new motherboard, CPU, PSU might solve...or might not. Transferring hard disks is a bit painful these days. Windows activation has been mentioned. Also XP SP2 is quite processor specific. Just moving a hardisk often causes a blue screen on boot due to a mismatch of processor microcode. Personally I don't bugger about upgrading core components anymore it's generally more cost effective to replace (sad but true). It does depend on how much you value your time, but you may be better to get a cheap Dell or something and just transfering your data. |
