Potentially stupid question about TVs

Will a UK TV work ok in other countries (in particular Asia-Pacific)?

i.e. if I connect it up to a local cable/ satellite box will it still decode the signal ok etc?

I am aware the DVD wont play discs but I am not sure if a TV would have problems?

dunno, think there are different number of lines that make the picture but then again i could be thinking about when i was like 10 or something and maybe its all now standard.

Have a look at World Television Standards

The UK uses PAL I. So a UK TV will work anywhere with that standard.

If you're in a country that uses a variant of PAL and connecting to the cable box via SCART/S-video, it should work. It probably won't work if connected up the the RF out connection.

I am specifically trying to work out whether a UK TV would work in Singapore, but I keep getting conflicting answers.

I have been told that SGP is on the UK system and therefore UK TVs are compatible. Anyone know if that is the case?

Thanks Jason, it looks like both are on PAL but different standards.

Anyone know for sure if a cable decoder box would work? Surely we have at least one Sky engineer on YD!!!

I am sure it would work. Most TV's these days are semi multi standard. It would cost too much to make them all dfferent for all the different standards. Why do you want to take one out? I am sure it would cost more to ship than to buy a new one out there. Electronics are very much cheaper than here.

The space the TVs take up in the shipping crate costs less than replacing them in SGP (even thought they are generally cheaper). Have already done the maths.

Sky is a satellite broadcaster and uses a different transmission method from the cable technologies, so a Sky engineer may not be of much use!

However, I have asked a colleague who is a CATV SI and his response is as follows:

No - Singapore uses PAL B. UK uses PAL I. The difference is the audio
handling. You can normally get around this by using a locally
produced/PAL B supporting Video Recorder with SCART/Component
video/audio handling as the Tuner and just using the TV as a display
unit. A cable STB may also work in this situation if it has similar
SCART/Component video/audio handling. By the way, SCART/Component Video
handling is the AV In/Out stuff, rather than UHF/VHF Aerial stuff.

There is always the chance that the person has bought a high class TV
(like mine) which is multi-standard, and then it would work but this is
not normally the case in the UK as we are a bunch of cheapskates.

Check the TV. IIRC (an I may be mistaking videos with TVs) but some are multifunction (SECAM, NTSC, PAL etc).
