The McAfee spam updates can go out as frequently as every 10 minutes, and regularly get the "Detect more spam than the others" awards...
Viruses don't change quite as quickly as spam, so having daily updates, especially when linked to heurisitic scanning, will detect all the current threats.
Have to agree that some scanners use more resources than others, but then some scanners do more work! (And a few are just bloated...)

And to the original poster, this problem sounds more like a system restore issue than a virus one... viruses are not that decerning about the files they delete!
