File Server Migration

All,

I'm looking to migrate approximately 330 user home drives from a W2K file server to a W2003 server on the same domain. I must admit networks and Active Directory are not my strongest subjects, I know enough to get by day to day. This is being scheduled over the weekend of 19th/20th August during a power down so hopefully shouldn't have issues with frigging around with open files.

Looking for some pointers really as to possible methods, ie, backup the folders on one server and restore to the other, a straight copy job etc.. (approx 100gb) Also is it possible update multiple accounts in AD to reflect the new profile location, ie change the home path from \\slonfiles1\abishop$ to \\slonfile04\abishop$. Also any advice re setting a task plan for this would be great.

Many thanks,

Ian

This should do the lot for you, even the shares.

Used it before and works a treat.

Hi JAG,

I'm an IT project Manager who spends most of his days on this stuff.

If you like I've no problem running through your approach etc. and giving you the benefit of my experience.

I've done this type of migration twice in the last month.

PM me if you would like to talk about plans, customer impact etc...

if its just their home directories, id just copy them in batches and then bulk update the active directory profile paths. There are apps out there that will do the AD update for you.

Yeah, I suggested that but I'm told it has to be done in one hit. Due to the total size of a couple hundred gb a straight copy would take eons. Not only that but it would mean users logging off and there's as much chance of that as you not getting road rage on the way to Scapa.
